Glossary term

Tail spend

Tail spend is the fragmented portion of expenditure made up of many relatively low-value transactions, suppliers, or categories outside the organization’s highest-spend areas. The boundary is organization-specific and should be defined. Analysis can reveal opportunities for catalogs, aggregation, preferred sources, policy changes, or simplified controls, while recognizing legitimate specialized demand.

In plain English

It is the long tail of smaller, scattered purchases that can be hard to manage efficiently.
